The VWA Trail Crew has undertaken the task of clearing the popular Vicente Flat Trail of accumulated deadfalls that have been an impediment to hikers and livestock. In March 2005 several crew members received their crosscut saw operator certificates at a class given at Fort Hunter Liggett as part of the USFS Region 5 crosscut saw training program. These certified sawyers, assisted by other crew members, will attempt to remove the downed trees from the entire length of the trail.
Due to the project's relative proximity to the trailheads on Highway 1 and Cone Peak Road we're planning to conduct this project as a series of weekend trips based at Vicente Flat Camp. Trips will be run every couple of weeks throughout the summer until the work is done. Our next trip is scheduled for July 9-10. There will be plenty of work even for those who dont have a saw operators certificate for example, preparation of the work area, assisting a certified sawyer at one end of a two-person crosscut saw, helping to roll cut trees off the trail, and clean-up of damaged tread once the trees are gone. Please join us if you feel so inclined. We'd be delighted to work with you.
Below are before and after pictures of some of the logs that have been removed on past trips (June 11-12 and July 25-26-27). The measuring stick shown in some of the pictures is 30" (76cm) long
